Cowboys at Texans, Week 4: The 0-3 Team Is Laying Points. Take It.
An 0-3 team is laying points to a 1-2 team with a positive point differential. Everything about that sentence argues for Dallas. Everything underneath it argues for Houston.
ESPN's line, captured Monday, Sep 28, ahead of Sunday's 1:00 p.m. local kick at Reliant Stadium: Houston Texans -2.5, total 47.5, moneyline Texans -135 / Cowboys +114. Our call is Dallas Cowboys 22, Houston Texans 25, under 47.5, and Houston -2.5 is the best bet on the board.
Start with what 0-3 has actually looked like. Houston lost to Buffalo 31-36, to Cincinnati 6-20, and at Indianapolis 17-19. One of those is a broken offense. The other two are a team still playing meaningful football in the fourth quarter. Houston's 54 points for and 75 against are the record, but the minus-21 differential belongs mostly to one afternoon against Cincinnati, and the market is pricing that afternoon as the baseline.
Now make Dallas's case, because it's better than the record suggests. The Cowboys lost at the Giants 20-28, beat Washington 37-20, and lost to Baltimore 31-34. Dallas has not been held below 20 in any of those games. That's a real floor, and it's why this isn't a free lunch at -2.5.
Here's the counterweight. Dallas hasn't held anybody below 20 either. The Giants scored 28, Washington 20, Baltimore 34. Houston's offense has been broken in exactly one game, and it now draws a defense that has surrendered the twenties in every game it has played. The Texans don't need to be good on Sunday. They need to be ordinary, and ordinary gets them into the 20s.
That's the matchup that decides this: a Houston offense with a low floor but a functioning ceiling against a Dallas defense that hasn't shown it can win a rock fight on the road in an in-state game. The Giants put 28 on that unit. The Ravens put 34 on it. A Texans offense that managed 31 against Buffalo and 17 in Indianapolis can find enough there to cover a short number at home.
Under 47.5 rides the same read. Houston's last two games finished 6-20 and 17-19, and Houston's offense is the throttle on this total. If the Texans are grinding possessions and settling for field goals, the number holds. That's the likeliest game script, because Houston has spent three weeks losing by playing close, low-margin football rather than getting run off the field.
The risk to our own position, stated plainly: Dallas's offense is the most functional thing in this game. If the Cowboys score the way they did against Washington, the under breaks and Houston has to win a shootout to cover. That's the one outcome that beats us, and it's live.
We took this price Monday. It will move before Sunday, and it should move toward Houston, because the number is short of a field goal and the difference between these two teams is thinner than their records suggest. The 0-3 next to Houston's name is a schedule artifact, not a verdict. Lay the 2.5 and take the Texans.
