Shane Steichen ruled Tyler Warren out and did it without the two things that would have made this a one-week story: a severity label and a timeline. After a Week 5 game-time decision that never resolved, the working assumption is a multi-week absence — and the more actionable read is that Indianapolis has no tight end to absorb the targets.
Steichen wouldn't say "setback" — and wouldn't say when. Asked directly whether Warren had one, Steichen offered: "it was a game time decision last week … just didn't work out."
He stepped around the word the reporter handed him, gave no diagnosis, and gave no target date. The only detail that matters is the failed ramp-up — "got him some work this week" — which means they tested the injury and it didn't hold. Coaches supply a timeline when one exists. A player close enough for a game-time decision who still can't clear seven days later is usually out beyond the next week. Warren's 30 receptions are the most of any Colt listed here, and his 213 yards included a 7-83 line in Week 5. This is the top of the target list, not a rotational piece. Treat him as a stash, not a start, and do not acquire him at his pre-injury price.
The room behind him is a void, not a handcuff. The three tight ends are Mo Alie-Cox (3 receptions, 30 yards), Drew Ogletree (1 for 4), and Will Mallory (1 for 16 in 2025). That's the entire receiving output of the position group.
Steichen's offense has used the TE2 as a sixth lineman; there is no route-running backup waiting for volume. The vacated targets land at receiver: Josh Downs (20 receptions, 249 yards), Keenan Allen (18 for 145 and a touchdown), and Laquon Treadwell (11 for 157). Downs is the volume play and the one whose weekly floor actually moves. Treadwell is the deeper-league add. Alie-Cox will be the popular waiver claim and the wrong one.
The quarterback room is being managed, not settled. On Anthony Richardson remaining the backup: "Right now he is, yes." On discipline for the possession charge: "I'll keep all the stuff internal in-house." Then, minutes later: "Rico's got a chance, we're working through that right now."
"Right now" is a one-week commitment. Pairing it with a refusal to rule out discipline is a hedge, not an endorsement — the team left itself room on both the depth chart and the punishment. A staff that is "working through" its backup job in late October has an open competition by another name. Daniel Jones has 1,021 passing yards but 3 touchdowns against 4 interceptions in five games: volume without efficiency, with pressure now coming from two directions. Warren's vacated targets raise the floor for Downs and Allen; the QB room caps the ceiling. That is the shape of a team the market has at +3.5 (DraftKings) — a number that prices the opponent, not the uncertainty.
Watch the final injury designation and, more tellingly, who lines up in the slot on third down. If Downs is inside with Allen and Treadwell outside, the redistribution has already been decided internally. The futures market hasn't caught up: FanDuel lists Indianapolis at +4000, DraftKings at +6500.
