Houston took the lead with 1:48 left. It held it for 92 seconds. S. Shrader's 53-yard field goal at 0:16 closed out a 19-17 Colts win, dropped the Texans to 0-3, and left the final score as the most flattering thing anyone can say about Houston's afternoon.
Start with the obvious: the Texans aren't 0-3 because of C.J. Stroud. Stroud went 16-of-27 for 167 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions and an 89.6 rating, and he was sacked three times. That's a quarterback playing well enough to win a game his running game and his play-caller wouldn't let him win.
The rushing numbers are the indictment. David Montgomery carried 11 times for 33 yards, a long of nine. Woody Marks carried five times for 15, also a long of nine. Sixteen carries, 48 yards from the two backs Houston leaned on. Stroud's 6.2 yards per attempt was a better rate than either of them managed on the ground, which is the kind of math that gets coordinators fired around Thanksgiving.
Marks did score the go-ahead touchdown, a 1-yard run off right tackle with B. Fisher reported in as eligible, and K. Fairbairn's extra point put Houston up 17-16. Good call. It also took the Texans until the final two minutes to manufacture a touchdown against an Indianapolis team that needed this one.
Then there's Will Anderson Jr., who finished with 2.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, seven tackles and a fumble recovery, and lost. That's the season in miniature. Houston's best player empties the tank, the defense keeps the game close, and the margin disappears with 16 seconds on the clock.
Xavier Hutchinson led the receiving day with three catches for 51 yards, including a 28-yarder that stood as Houston's longest gain through the air. Dalton Schultz added 30 yards on three catches. Foster Moreau caught a touchdown, but it went for six yards, which is roughly the shape of this offense: everything short, nothing easy, nobody to hand it to.
Indianapolis improved to 1-2 by winning a game it didn't control. Shrader's 53-yarder was the longest possible answer to the shortest possible clock. The official leaders list has Daniel Jones as both a passing and a rushing leader for the Colts, with Jonathan Taylor, Seth McGowan and Tyler Warren filling out the rest of the rushing entries. Three names for a team that scored 19 points and won by two. That's not a formula, that's survival.
My read, and I'll own it: Houston's 0-3 is a run-game and line problem wearing a quarterback's jersey. Stroud isn't the leak. Until the Texans can hand the ball off for more than three yards a carry, they'll keep losing games their defense and their quarterback keep close, and Will Anderson Jr. will keep playing great football in losses. Fourteen games left to prove me wrong.
