Start Colston Loveland in Week 1. Pay up for him in DFS too.
The case is not complicated, and it does not need to be. Carolina allowed the second-most yards per target to tight ends last season. That is a matchup fact, and tight end is a matchup position more than any other on the fantasy board — you are not chasing talent in Week 1 at tight end, you are chasing targets against a defense that cannot cover the position.
Now the player. Loveland is in the mix for TE1 overall — not top-five, not "a nice upside play." TE1. That is the tier where the position actually wins you weeks instead of just not losing them, and it means whoever is starting him is starting him with confidence, not apology.
Here is the part I like best: Loveland leads Chicago in startable weeks. Read that again. On a roster full of names, the tight end is the one who shows up most often as a guy you can actually put in a lineup. That is a usage statement masquerading as a ranking. Startable weeks do not come from scheme luck. They come from being on the field and being trusted, week after week, in an offense that keeps going back to him.
So the Week 1 call writes itself. A tight end with a legitimate TE1 ceiling, on a team that feeds him, against a defense that bled yards per target to the position all last season. That is not a coin flip. That is the rare Week 1 tight end decision that does not require you to guess.
DFS: pay up. Every year the sharp money hunts the cheap tight end and every year the expensive one with the soft matchup outscoring him by double digits is the reason a lineup dies. Loveland is the pay-up. If you are building around a tight end this week, build around this one, and spend the savings elsewhere.
What changes my mind: if the reports out of practice point to a snap or route share that splits the position — or if there is any injury news between now and kickoff — I reassess, because everything above depends on him being the guy Chicago goes to. Absent that, he is in my lineup.
Play him.
