Joe Burrow went 28-of-37 for 282 yards, three touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 123.9 passer rating. He lost. Pittsburgh's 30-27 win says almost nothing about Burrow and a great deal about the team around him.
Cincinnati's 27 points were pure quarterbacking, and the Bengals' only sack allowed all afternoon was the one that ended the game. One sack, one strip, one recovery. That's the emptiest 27 points you'll see this season.
Burrow spread the damage across the depth chart. Ja'Marr Chase caught 9 of 12 targets for 98 yards and a touchdown. Tee Higgins caught 6 of 7 for 90 and a score, including a 28-yarder. Mike Gesicki added 3 for 37 and a touchdown, Dohnte Meyers 3 for 29. Three scoring throws to three different receivers is a functioning passing offense. It is not a functioning offense.
Cincinnati ran it 18 times against 37 Burrow attempts, and that split got more lopsided as the game tightened, not less. Chase Brown's 13 carries for 61 yards (4.7 a pop, long of 13) was the entire ground game. Samaje Perine got 3 carries for 9 yards. Burrow's two scrambles went for 13. When the Bengals needed to drain a clock or shorten a possession, they asked their quarterback to do it from the pocket, and the pocket broke exactly once.
The last meaningful snap was a shotgun dropback. Burrow sacked at the Pittsburgh 46 for minus-8 by D. Harmon, who forced the fumble on the same contact. Sebastian Joseph-Day recovered at the Cincinnati 49 with 53 seconds left. Chris Boswell's 33-yard field goal at 2:15, with C. Kuntz snapping and C. Johnston holding, had put Pittsburgh up 30-27. Burrow never touched the ball again with a chance to tie.
That wasn't Cincinnati's only giveaway. Ke'Shawn Williams lost a fumble as well, and his five kickoff returns for 131 yards (26.2 average, long of 34) tell you how often the Bengals were receiving instead of kicking. Five return opportunities is not the profile of a team controlling field position or game state.
What stands out on the Pittsburgh side is the shape of the offense, not its volume. The Steelers' listed leaders are Aaron Rodgers in both passing and rushing, Jaylen Warren on the ground, and then Pat Freiermuth, a tight end, and Travis Homer among the rushing leaders. A tight end showing up in the run-game leaders is a committee with heavy personnel, and a committee is precisely what you want when you're sitting on a fourth-quarter lead and need to burn three minutes before a field goal.
Demetrius Knight Jr. finished with nine tackles and Kyle Dugger eight for Cincinnati. Nine stops with only two solo is a linebacker cleaning up other people's damage, not a defense dictating terms. This game was decided by the Bengals' inability to keep the ball on the ground and their habit of giving it away, not by anything Pittsburgh's offense did that Cincinnati couldn't answer.
Both teams are 2-1. My read is that only one of those records travels. Cincinnati will keep winning games Burrow throws three touchdown passes in, because most weeks that's enough. It won't win the ones where the run game vanishes, the pass-run split hits 2-to-1, and the pocket collapses on the final drive. Sunday was that game, and the margin was eight yards and a loose ball.
