Bengals at Steelers: Pittsburgh Gets the Field Goal
A week after producing three points in Foxborough, the Steelers get a divisional home game and 3.5 points. The market's price is defensible. Our number says Pittsburgh cashes it anyway.
Cincinnati arrives 2-0 with a plus-20 differential: 33-27 over Tampa Bay in Week 1, then 20-6 at Houston. Pittsburgh is 1-1 at minus-10, a 20-13 win over Atlanta followed by a 3-20 loss at New England. Here's the figure that explains this game better than either record does. Both teams have allowed 33 points. The entire separation between them lives on offense, and that's why the total sits at 42.5, third-lowest on the board.
The price is Cincinnati Bengals -3.5, total 42.5, moneyline Pittsburgh Steelers +154 / Cincinnati Bengals -185 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Sep 21). Nothing there is irrational. Cincinnati has been the better team across two weeks and the moneyline reflects it. The only live question is whether two weeks of better is worth laying a field goal and a hook on the road inside the AFC North.
It isn't. Pittsburgh's 23 points are the loudest number in this game and the one most likely to be over-read. Week 2 was a three-point afternoon in New England. Week 1 was a 20-point win. Cincinnati's defense zigzagged the other way, 27 conceded to Tampa Bay and six to Houston. Two games is not a trend for either unit. It's a sample, and the market has already charged full price for the bad half of both.
The matchup that decides it is Pittsburgh's offense against a Bengals defense that has shown two completely different levels. If the Houston version travels, the one that held the Texans to six, then Pittsburgh's season output becomes a real constraint and the low total becomes a ceiling on Cincinnati too. Our projection is Cincinnati Bengals 23, Pittsburgh Steelers 20, which hands Pittsburgh the spread, not just the hook. That's a one-score game, and the Under 42.5 comes with it. In a game projected this close and this low, the underdog carrying the extra points is the right side.
The thing most likely to break our position is repetition. If Cincinnati's Houston defensive outing is the true one and Pittsburgh's New England offensive outing is the true one, the Bengals win comfortably and both our positions die together. The Steelers don't have to win Sunday. They have to avoid getting run out of Acrisure Stadium by a team laying a field goal on the road in a divisional game for the first time in this matchup. I'll take Pittsburgh +3.5, and the Under with it.
