Bears Start Case Keenum Over Tyson Bagent With Caleb Williams Out
The Bears had a choice at quarterback for Week 3. They picked the veteran.
Case Keenum started over Tyson Bagent with Caleb Williams officially out, and that decision says as much about how the staff views Bagent as it does about Keenum. When the starter goes down and a team reaches past the younger, higher-upside backup for a journeyman, the message is trust. They want someone who won't lose the game.
Williams' injury came in Chicago's home opener, a loss to Minnesota played in a downpour. The Bears had opened the season with a record-setting win over Carolina, so the Week 3 pivot is a course correction mid-stride rather than a rebuild decision.
Fantasy and DFS read: fade the Bears' passing game. Keenum is a minimum-salary dart in large-field GPPs and nothing more; the touchdown equity and rushing floor Williams brings are gone. Bagent is the more interesting dynasty asset, but he's on the bench, so there's nothing to roster this week. Every Chicago pass catcher takes a hit, Cole Kmet included, and Kmet slides toward sit-or-bench territory in season-long formats. In DFS, don't chase the cheap Chicago stack just because the price is low. The leverage is on the other side of the ball.
This is also the latest entry in a long-running Chicago problem. The franchise has cycled through 23 different starting quarterbacks since 2006, and Keenum is a bridge, not a plan.
My verdict: Keenum starts exactly as long as Williams is out, and no longer. If Williams misses multiple weeks, the Bears will give Bagent a look before midseason. A one- or two-week Keenum bridge is defensible. A month of it isn't. Bagent's fantasy value is a bet on that happening, not on Week 3.
