Saquon Barkley averaged 5.5 yards a carry. Jalen Hurts averaged 6.3. Philadelphia lost 27-7 anyway.
That's the entire diagnosis. The Eagles didn't get pushed around in this one. They got away from the thing that was working and lost a game they spent the afternoon moving the ball in. Chicago is 2-1. So is Philadelphia, and only one of those records is going to look shaky by November.
Start with the passing game, because that's where the game went. Hurts finished 16 of 25 for 153 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, a 64.2 rating, and two sacks for 12 lost yards. One of his last meaningful throws was the kind you take when you've run out of ideas: 5:19 in the fourth quarter, no huddle, shotgun, a deep shot down the right sideline to Makai Lemon that fell incomplete with Malik Muhammad II in coverage. Andy Dalton's afternoon was one attempt, one interception, a 0.0 rating.
Sixteen completions for 153 yards is not an offense. It's a punt with extra steps. And the target distribution makes it worse. DeVonta Smith caught 6 of 8 targets for 65 yards with a long of 30. Nobody else on the roster topped 32 yards. Dontayvion Wicks went 2 for 32 on 5 targets. Lemon went 3 for 29 on 4. Zach Ertz 1 for 9. Will Shipley 1 for 11. Johnny Mundt 1 for 4. Barkley, the best player on the field, drew 2 targets and turned them into minus-2 yards. Tank Bigsby caught one for 5 and lost a fumble.
Barkley carried the ball 15 times. Fifteen. He ripped off 17 yards on one of them. Hurts added 4 carries for 25 yards and the only touchdown Philadelphia scored, a 20-yard run. That's the offense.
Chicago's side of the ledger is thinner in the box than the scoreline suggests. Case Keenum shows up as the Bears' passing leader and again among the rushers, alongside D'Andre Swift, Kyle Monangai, and Luther Burden III. Whatever the Bears did, they did it without needing a star turn. Twenty-seven points and a 2-1 record is the headline. The mechanism is that Philadelphia kept handing the game over.
An official timeout at 7:19 in the fourth was followed by that failed deep shot at 5:19 and then 0:00. For a team ripping off 5.5 yards a carry, the final minutes were spent throwing into coverage.
Now the part that will annoy people in Philadelphia. The Eagles' defense spent the afternoon making tackles. Zack Baun finished with 9 tackles, 5 solo, 2 for loss, and a pass defensed. Andrew Mukuba had 9. Jihaad Campbell had 9. Quinyon Mitchell had 7 tackles, 6 solo, 2 for loss, and 2 passes defensed. When three defenders all land on 9 tackles, the other team ran a lot of plays, and Chicago still only needed 27 points to win this comfortably. That's not a talent problem.
My read: Philadelphia is a run-first team that hasn't admitted it yet. Fifteen Barkley carries against 25 Hurts attempts is the wrong ratio, and until that flips, the Eagles' ceiling is a 64.2 passer rating in a game their best player averaged 5.5 yards a touch. The box score will blame the defense. The film won't.
