The Panthers placed both of their starting cornerbacks on injured reserve. Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) were hurt in Carolina's Week 3 loss to the Browns, and ESPN reported both are now on IR, which carries a four-game minimum.
That's the whole top of the depth chart at outside corner, not one injury with a next-man-up answer behind it. Horn and Jackson were the two starters, so whoever lines up at corner for Carolina in Week 4 is a player the coaching staff had already decided was not good enough to beat either of them out in August.
The four-game floor is the part that stings. This isn't a week-to-week question the Panthers can manage with a game-day elevation and a coverage shell tilted toward help. Two cornerback bodies have to come from somewhere, and there's no version of this where the replacement play is as good as the starter play at the position that touches every down.
My read: Carolina's defense just lost the one unit it could least afford to thin out, and no scheme adjustment covers for both boundary spots at once. If you were counting on this secondary holding up through the next month, you were wrong, and the tape is about to show it.
