The wire gave us three teams and nine moves, and two of the three teams that put a player on injured reserve never replaced the position that got hurt. That's the story.

Carolina is the exception, and the only clean swap of the day. Claudin Cherelus went on IR; Maema Njongmeta came up from the practice squad to the active roster to take the roster spot. That matters more than it sounds, because a practice squad player signed to the 53 stays there. An elevation doesn't. The Panthers also elevated David Moore and Anthony Tyus from the practice squad, which is the part worth watching against Cleveland. Rather than promote anyone permanently, Carolina is renting a veteran receiver and a running back for one week. That reads like a staff that doesn't trust its WR3 and RB2 yet, and would rather patch than commit.

Dallas went the other direction. P.J. Locke, a safety, landed on IR, and the Cowboys responded with a linebacker signed off the practice squad and a corner elevated for the week. I don't think that's an accident. My read is that Dallas would rather cover Locke's snaps with an extra defensive back on the field than burn a 53-man spot on a safety who would only play in the box. Justin Barron's signing is the durable move. Reddy Steward's elevation is a one-week bandage, and it reverts the moment the Cowboys need the spot back.

Cincinnati made the loudest move, and hardly anyone will frame it that way. Andrei Iosivas to IR. Joe Giles-Harris off the practice squad to the active roster. Tanner Hudson elevated at tight end. The Bengals lost a receiver and answered with a linebacker and a tight end. They did not elevate a receiver. Either the in-house replacement is already on the 53 and the staff is comfortable, or Cincinnati is about to show Pittsburgh more two-tight-end personnel than it has all season. Hudson's elevation is temporary, so the Bengals are treating the Iosivas hole as a short-term problem. That's the one transaction here with real pass-game gravity, and it tells you what the coaching staff thinks of the receivers already in the building.

Step back and the pattern is blunt. All three teams signed a linebacker to the active roster, the permanent kind of move. All three also made at least one temporary elevation, the kind that vanishes Monday. Three front offices looked at their rosters in the same week and decided the linebacker room needed a committed body while the receiver, running back, safety and corner holes were week-to-week problems. Linebacker has become the position rosters treat as replaceable right up until it isn't.

So here's my bet. Njongmeta, Barron and Giles-Harris are all still on their 53s in December. Moore, Tyus, Steward and Hudson are gone by Monday, and half of them are back the following Saturday. And if one of these three teams loses a close game in the next month, it will be because it patched a receiver or safety hole with a body that reverts, not because it added a linebacker nobody has heard of.
