Two weeks, two 14-26 losses, and the market still wants you to believe Los Angeles can't stay within a touchdown in Orchard Park.
Buffalo is 2-0, home at Highmark Stadium, 1:00 p.m. local Sunday. The line is Bills -7, total 50.5, moneyline Buffalo -325 and Los Angeles +260 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Sep 21). Nobody hangs +260 on a team they expect to get run out of the building. That price is the tell.
Start with the Chargers, because the case against them writes itself. Lost to Arizona 14-26. Lost to Las Vegas 14-26. Same score, two different opponents. Zero wins, 28 points scored, 52 allowed, a differential of -24. That's a bad team by any measure, and I'm not pretending otherwise.
Here's what the consensus does with those two lines: decides the Chargers' offense is broken and the Bills' seven is free money. The second half of that is wrong.
Buffalo has allowed 31 points in both of its wins, 36-31 at Houston and 41-31 against Detroit. The Bills put up 77 points in two weeks and gave back 62, a differential of +15. That is not a defense that smothers anybody. It's a defense that wins track meets, and it's why the total sits at 50.5, the second-highest on the board. Over 50.5 is the half of this ticket I feel best about.
The matchup that decides this game is Buffalo's offense against a Chargers defense that has surrendered 26 points in each of its first two games. If Los Angeles holds the Bills anywhere near 26, the seven is dead. And there's no evidence Buffalo wins any other way. Both of its games turned into shootouts. Both required the offense to keep scoring. A Bills team that has to score to win is a Bills team that doesn't cover comfortably.
The other side of the ledger: the Chargers must score more than 14 for the first time this season, and they have to do it in one of the loudest stadiums in the league. That's the real risk, and it's real. But Buffalo's defense has let two straight opponents reach 31. If Houston and Detroit can do that, the question about LA's weapons is a lot less frightening than the price suggests.
Seven is not a number you lay with a defense that has given up 31 twice. The market has priced Buffalo's record and ignored Buffalo's games. Those are different things.
Our call: Chargers +7, over 50.5. Projection, Chargers 22, Buffalo 29. That is a projection, not a certainty. The thing most likely to break it is the simplest one: the Chargers' offense really is what the Arizona and Las Vegas tape says it is, 14 points is the ceiling rather than the floor, and the seven becomes a gift to Buffalo. I don't think it is. I think a winless team with a -24 differential getting a full touchdown, against a defense that's already been scored on 31 twice, is the best number on this board.
