Ed Oliver never took a snap Thursday night, and Buffalo knew it before kickoff. The Bills' defensive tackle injured his hip during pregame warmups and was inactive for the Week 2 game against the Detroit Lions, per ESPN.
That's the detail that matters. This wasn't contact in the second quarter or a practice tweak. ESPN's reporting carried both framings (an earlier story described the injury as suffered in Thursday's game, a later one specified warmups), but the outcome was identical: Buffalo's top interior defender was gone before the coin toss.
What Detroit did next is the argument for why it matters. Jared Goff finished 26-of-38 for 327 yards, four touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 130.0 passer rating. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught 9 of 13 targets for 142 yards and two scores. Sam LaPorta added six catches for 52 yards and a touchdown on seven targets. Jahmyr Gibbs caught six for 61 and another score, plus 52 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Four different Lions scored through the air. That's not one coverage bust. That's a defense getting picked apart at every level.
The counterweight is real and I'll give it its due: Buffalo sacked Goff four times. The edge rush still won reps. But a 130.0 rating with zero interceptions says Detroit found soft answers underneath and over the middle, and losing a defensive tackle who occupies double teams is exactly how that happens.
Hip injuries that surface in warmups concern me more than ones that show up on a hit. There's no single mechanism to point at, which usually means something that was already building. If Oliver misses extended time, Buffalo's interior depth becomes a season-long problem, not a Week 2 footnote. The run defense gets hit first, and scheme won't fix a missing anchor.
I'd bet on caution from the Bills here. They can win games without him. They can't win the ones where Goff posts a 130.0 rating and nobody touches him.
