Bills Rule Out DJ Moore With Shoulder Injury, and Week 3 Is Still on the Table
Buffalo ruled DJ Moore out of Thursday night's home opener against the Lions with a shoulder injury. The early read on Week 3 is closer to probable than doubtful.
Moore got hurt diving in the end zone late in the second quarter. He was announced questionable to return, then downgraded to out at halftime. That second designation tends to scare people more than it should. A halftime downgrade in a Thursday game is often a calendar decision as much as a medical one: the staff gets a long look at the joint, the player doesn't get walked back into a short week, and the team buys 10 days before it has to make a real call. Yahoo Sports reported the injury is not considered serious.
Offensive coordinator Joe Brady added the only quote that matters so far. "If DJ Moore can be out there for Week 3, he'll be out there." Read that carefully. Brady isn't describing a snap count, a package, or a pitch limit. He's describing full participation, contingent on one thing. Coaches who expect a limited role say so. Coaches who expect nothing say nothing at all.
The game Moore left was a Detroit passing showcase: Jared Goff finished 26-of-38 for 327 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 130.0 rating, with Amon-Ra St. Brown catching 9 balls for 142 yards and two scores. Moore doesn't defend any of that. But it's the environment Buffalo was operating in when it lost him, and it's the environment the Bills have to keep pace with once he's back.
What I'd watch is Wednesday's practice report, not Brady's Monday presser. A limited designation midweek with a full Friday would be the cleanest signal. My call: Moore plays Week 3. The reported severity doesn't support an absence, Brady's phrasing doesn't leave room for a managed role, and the Bills have no incentive to invent one.
The risk isn't that Moore misses time. It's that shoulder injuries on diving catches get labeled day-to-day for three weeks while the player quietly plays through them at less than full extension. That's the version worth tracking.
Verdict: Moore suits up in Week 3. If he doesn't, the shoulder was worse than anyone is saying right now.
