Texans right tackle Braden Smith will miss time with a plantar fascia injury, but the team caught a break: it's not a season-ender.

Smith was carted off the field during Wednesday's joint practice with the Panthers. ProFootballTalk reported the diagnosis, and ESPN sources confirmed the injury isn't long-term. Plantar fascia issues are tricky. They affect the foot's arch and can linger for weeks. There's no clear timeline for Smith's return.

The timing is tough. Houston's offensive line already has question marks. Smith was expected to anchor the right side and help protect C.J. Stroud. Now the team faces an undefined absence. That pressures the depth chart. The backups will get extra reps, but none have Smith's experience.

The fantasy angle is indirect but real. When a starting tackle goes down, it raises the floor risk for the entire offense. Stroud's pass protection could suffer, and the running game might lose a key blocker. That affects the outlook for Houston's skill players, even if Smith isn't a fantasy name you'll ever start.

The good news: this isn't a rupture. The bad news: plantar fascia injuries don't have a quick fix. The Texans can try to manage the pain, but they'd be wiser to give Smith the time to heal properly. Rushing him back could turn a weeks-long issue into a season-long saga.

Expect the Texans to be cautious. The line depth will be tested in the final preseason games and possibly into September. If Smith isn't ready for Week 1, the team needs a plan. Whether that means sliding a backup into right tackle or shuffling the alignment, it's a problem the coaching staff must solve.

The verdict: Smith's health matters more than his availability. The Texans should keep him out until he's truly ready. A healthy Smith in October is worth more than a hobbled one in September.
