The Bears' quarterback rotation didn't just lose to the Bengals on Saturday night. It put up 3.5 yards per pass attempt. Combined, Case Keenum, Miller Moss, and Caleb Williams completed 24 of 43 throws for 152 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. That's how you score nine points. Cincinnati won 27-9 and moved to 2-0 in the preseason. Chicago fell to 1-1. But the scoreline is less interesting than what the Bears showed behind Williams, and even what Williams himself did: 2-of-5 for 28 yards with a 58.8 rating. Keenum went 9-of-17 for 119 yards, a 75.4 rating. Moss completed 13 of 21 but for just 5 yards, took two sacks for 14 yards lost. None of that solves anything.
The run game didn't help. Roschon Johnson carried 12 times for 1 yard. One yard. Salvon Ahmed added 14 on six carries. Between them, 18 carries for 15 yards. There's no way to spin that as a positive for the offensive line or the backs. When the Bears needed to move the ball, there was nowhere to go.
Cincinnati got what it needed. Josh Johnson and Sean Clifford handled the passing, and Clifford was among the rushing leaders along with Tahj Brooks and Kentrel Bullock. No box-score stats for the Bengals are necessary; they controlled the game into the fourth quarter. The final turning point came after a Bengals punt pinned the Bears at their own 12 with 2:29 remaining. Scotty Miller returned it to the 19. Then Miller Moss, pressured by Isaiah Foskey, threw incomplete downfield. That was the game.
Preseason numbers are noise, usually. These aren't. A 3.5 yards-per-attempt day is not a blip; it's a floor. The Bears' backup quarterback battle is a battle of inefficiency, and the rushing attack that should protect a young starter gave him nothing. If Williams is the answer, he's going to have to do it without a run game. If he's not, the Bears have a deeper problem than any single position can fix. The 1-1 record is cosmetic. The offense that showed up in Cincinnati would lose to most NFL teams on its worst day, and that's the thing the Bears should actually be worried about.
