Lions safety Avonte Maddox out for season with foot injury, Dan Campbell says
Dan Campbell didn't leave room for interpretation Monday: Avonte Maddox is done for the year. Detroit's starting safety injured his left foot in the Lions' loss to the Buffalo Bills, and Campbell said Maddox will undergo surgery to repair it.
The injury lands on a secondary already stretched thin. Maddox was starting because Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch are both on the physically unable to perform list. Detroit opened the season without its top two safeties and has now lost the player who filled in for both. Maddox started the first two weeks.
The Lions aren't standing still. Reporting indicates the team is canvassing the league for multiple replacements, and Pride of Detroit reported the staff is promising shake-ups in the defensive backfield. That's the language of a coaching room that knows the current group isn't good enough.
What Detroit does next matters more than the announcement. The options are narrow: a street free agent who hasn't been in a camp, a practice-squad promotion, or a trade for a veteran who has to learn the scheme on the fly. The first two are cheap and slow. The third costs draft capital for a player who might be a two-month rental.
One thing the depth chart makes clear: this isn't a one-for-one swap. Maddox was the bridge between Joseph and Branch returning, and that bridge is gone. Whoever Detroit signs is now a starter, not insurance.
Campbell has built his defense on disguising coverages, and disguising coverages requires safeties he trusts to rotate on time. He doesn't have those right now. Opposing offenses will test the middle of the field until Detroit proves it can hold up there, and coordinators get paid to find that seam first.
My read: the Lions add at least one veteran safety before the weekend, likely two, because the alternative is asking a patchwork group to survive the rest of the schedule. Campbell doesn't hedge in press conferences. He won't hedge on the roster either. The signing is coming, and it needs to be someone who can play deep on Day 1.
