Saints at Lions: Detroit Should Win. Covering 6.5 Is the Hard Part.
Ford Field, Sept. 13, 1 p.m. local kickoff. Detroit is -6.5, the total sits at 50, and the moneyline reads New Orleans +275 / Detroit -305.
Read those two Detroit prices side by side. The -305 makes the Lions a clear favorite to win the game. The -6.5 makes them a nearly touchdown favorite to win it comfortably. Those are different claims. Only one of them is well supported heading into a season opener, where no regular-season game has been played and nobody has real film on anybody.
Our published read: the Lions as a nearly touchdown home favorite reflect respect for their offensive power, and that number is too big. New Orleans has enough firepower to stay in contention. Our projection is New Orleans 24, Detroit 27, with the total going over 50. Best bet: New Orleans +6.5.
The case is simple. A road underdog at +6.5 does not need to win. It needs to keep the game within a score into the fourth quarter, and openers historically hand that kind of variance to the underdog rather than take it away. Blowouts in the first week usually require one team to be dramatically further along than the other. Nothing in the price says that about these two.
The total tells the same story from the other direction. Fifty points is a number that expects both offenses to produce, and Ford Field in September, indoors on a fast track, is the right venue for it. Our projection clears the total, and the way it clears matters: New Orleans scoring in the twenties is baked into the call, not tacked on. If the Saints are putting up points, then Detroit covering 6.5 requires a genuinely dominant afternoon from the Lions, not just a good one.
That is the matchup that decides this game. Not a receiver against a corner, not a pass rush against a rebuilt line. The game state. Can Detroit, whose offensive power is the entire reason this number is where it is, grab a two-score cushion early and force New Orleans into catch-up mode? If the Lions land a couple of quick scores, the 6.5 stops being a problem for them and our card is in trouble. If the Saints answer, that spread gets very uncomfortable very fast.
Here is the honest risk to our own position. Home favorites with a top-tier offense can turn a tight game into a rout in a single quarter, and the moneyline says Detroit winning outright is the expected result, not an upset. Our call has the Saints losing. It just has them losing close, and it has them scoring enough to push the total past 50.
Season openers are the worst week of the year to lay nearly a touchdown, and that is the whole bet. Detroit is the better team and probably wins the football game. The price asks them to prove something nobody has proven yet in September. Give me New Orleans and the points, and give me the over, with the Saints keeping it within a score into the fourth quarter as the thing that makes both halves of the ticket good.
