Cardinals Rule Out Dooley for at Least a Week, Jeremiah for Sunday Against the Rams
Arizona heads into a division game against the Los Angeles Rams with two holes in the plan, and Mike LaFleur's press conference left one of them conspicuously open.
Dooley is out for at least this week, with a re-evaluation scheduled after. That "at least" is the whole story. Coaches schedule checkpoints for players they can't yet project, and LaFleur's phrasing says the Arizona Cardinals have a next appointment rather than a return date. My read: Dooley misses more than one game. The tell is that no optimism got attached to the timetable. When a coach expects a player back, he usually says so and takes the follow-up question. LaFleur handed out a calendar instead. What would make me wrong is a clean re-evaluation early next week and a full practice Wednesday.
Jeremiah won't play Sunday, and the more informative half of that update is what didn't happen. LaFleur said there's been no discussion of placing him on injured reserve. That isn't administrative housekeeping. IR carries a multi-week minimum by rule, and for most of the league's history the designation ended a season outright, which is why teams still treat it like a last resort rather than a paperwork shortcut. A coach who declines to use it is telling you he expects the player back inside the short window. With Dooley already down, the temptation to free a roster spot would have been real. LaFleur didn't take it, and I think that's the right call for a player the Cardinals clearly believe is week-to-week rather than month-to-month.
The cost lands at the bottom of the Arizona roster. Two unavailable players mean practice-squad elevations and a reshuffled game-day lineup, and those elevations are a finite resource across a seventeen-game season. The beneficiaries are whoever sits behind Dooley and Jeremiah on the depth chart. I'd rather not guess at names the club hasn't put in front of us.
Here's the part that should worry Arizona more than either individual absence. The Rams game is a division game, and division games are where thin depth gets exposed fastest, because there's no schematic surprise left to lean on. Los Angeles knows exactly which matchups just got softer. The Cardinals can survive one week of that. Two or three weeks of it changes what the defense or the offense can call, and that's a coaching problem before it's a roster problem.
So here's my verdict, and I'll sign it. Dooley is out past this week, not just through it. Jeremiah avoids injured reserve entirely and plays again before the Cardinals ever consider filing the paperwork. And Arizona adds a body before kickoff Sunday, because the alternative is walking into a division game one short.
If the re-evaluation comes back clean Monday and Dooley is practicing Wednesday, I'm wrong, and the Arizona Cardinals will be glad I am.
