San Francisco is 5-0, and the 49ers got there Sunday on 189 passing yards and a defensive touchdown. That's the story of a 32-29 win over Seattle, even if the final margin reads like a shootout.
Brock Purdy's line is what a winning quarterback's line looks like when he isn't the reason: 19 of 29 for 189 yards, 6.5 per attempt, two touchdowns, one interception, a 92.5 rating. Sam Darnold threw for 195 yards and lost anyway. The difference lives in two columns. Darnold was sacked five times for 33 yards, and he threw two interceptions. His adjusted QBR was 32.2. Purdy's was 62.3. One quarterback managed the game. The other had it taken from him.
This was a Seattle loss more than a San Francisco statement, and the Seahawks' own numbers say so. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught five passes for 102 yards and a touchdown, 20.4 a reception, with a 38-yard long. That's a real afternoon, and it produced 29 points at home against an unbeaten team. Emanuel Wilson carried 20 times for 61 yards, 3.1 a carry, and scored once. Twenty carries for 61 yards isn't a run game that closes anything. It's a run game that asks the quarterback to survive third down, and Darnold didn't.
San Francisco didn't need much from him. Christian McCaffrey ran 11 times for 68 yards, 6.2 a carry, and a touchdown. Mike Evans caught 7 of 10 targets for 113 yards and a score, with a 28-yard long. Purdy threw 29 times. The 49ers were content to let the front seven decide it, and the front seven did. Gracen Halton recovered a fumble and returned it for a defensive touchdown, adding a sack and two tackles for loss. Fred Warner made 10 tackles. Jaden Dugger made nine, with a sack. Keion White had a sack and two tackles for loss. When a team wins by three with 189 passing yards, that's the ledger.
It was not clean. Deebo Samuel Sr. and Jacob Cowing each lost a fumble, so the 49ers handed the ball back twice themselves. A team that lives on the margins can't keep doing that and keep winning by three.
The finish came from the kicking game and a replay booth. Eddy Pineiro's 44-yard field goal with 1:56 left produced the game's final points. With 54 seconds remaining, Darnold hit Cooper Kupp for 9 yards to the San Francisco 41, Malik Mustapha shoving him out of bounds. The replay official reviewed the short-of-the-line-to-gain ruling and upheld it, and the final minute ran out from there.
Undefeated Octobers are common in the NFL. Undefeated Decembers are not. The 49ers have a defense that sacks quarterbacks and an offense that has not yet had to win a game by itself, and those teams tend to look unbeatable right up until someone makes the quarterback throw 40 times. Purdy threw 29 on Sunday and his team won. That trade worked against the Seahawks in Week 5. It is a much worse trade in January, and the 49ers have built their 5-0 on it. I'd bet on the front seven every week. I would not yet bet on the quarterback to rescue them when the front seven has an ordinary Sunday.
