The reflex on a Deebo Samuel absence is to buy the next receiver up. The 49ers already ran that experiment, and the answer wasn't a receiver absorbing Deebo's role — Deebo's role was already gone. Through five games he sits at 16 receptions, 206 yards, 3 touchdowns, with back-to-back lines of 5-26 and 2-21. Meanwhile Mike Evans has 24 receptions, 326 yards and 3 scores, including 7-113-1 in the same Week 5 game Deebo went 2-21. The market will chase the wrong name.
The beneficiary has a stat line — and a designation
Shanahan's injury run wasn't a list, it was a caveat: "Evans questionable, Halton questionable, Neil questionable, Kirk questionable." Four names, one breath, immediately after the confirmed outs.
That matters because the obvious "next man up" candidates aren't the ones producing. Ricky Pearsall's last full season reads 9 games, 36 receptions, 528 yards, 0 touchdowns — a chain-mover with no scoring equity. Christian Kirk's prior season: 13 games, 28 receptions, 239 yards, 1 touchdown. Evans is the only receiver in this room with a 2026 résumé that looks like a WR1, and he's the one carrying a questionable tag.
The implication: if Evans plays, he's the target leader and Deebo's vacated work is a rounding error, because Evans had already taken it. If Evans sits, the tree collapses to Pearsall and Kirk — who is himself questionable — against a defense that no longer has to account for a healthy boundary winner. That's the scenario that should worry anyone stacking the pass game, and it's the one the reflexive "Deebo out, buy the receivers" logic ignores entirely.
"Questionable" here is a legal shield, not information
Shanahan was explicit about his own process: "anybody we have any question about is questionable."
Read that as an admission. The designation is being applied at the floor, not the ceiling — it tells you nothing about practice participation, and it tells you nothing about Monday. The genuinely actionable information is the binary set: Deebo out, Bosa out, Wallow out, Sigel out. Those four are settled. Everything else is a decision deferred to the inactive list.
For fantasy purposes that means you do not bench Evans on the letter Q. You also don't treat Kirk or Stout as unavailable until the inactives drop. The one thing you can bank: Deebo's absence is real and Bosa's is real, which pulls in opposite directions for the team's own profile — a thinner pass rush against a fuller receiving corps on the other side.
Black plays; McCaffrey is unaffected
Shanahan on the rookie: "Expect Kaelon Black to play Monday." Followed immediately by the reason for the hedge — "he's having a baby right now."
That's a genuine availability note, and it's also a snap-count note. Black's weekly rushing totals read 16, 13, 17, 25 yards, plus one catch for 5 yards on the season. He is a real depth body, not a fantasy add, and a newborn is not a reason to project a workload bump. Christian McCaffrey has 286 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns, 19 receptions and 137 receiving yards — he is the backfield, and if anything Deebo's absence pushes more of the short-area work toward a back who already has 19 catches.
The quarterback and the price
Brock Purdy: 1,196 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, 2 interceptions through five games — but 218 and 189 yards the last two weeks as the offense leaned on McCaffrey and Evans. Removing a 206-yard receiver does not automatically lift his volume; it more likely concentrates it. The 13-to-2 ratio is the number to trust, not the yardage.
On the future: the 49ers sit +1700 at DraftKings and BetRivers, +1600 at FanDuel, +1400 at BetOnline — the shortest price on the board. A one-game absence for a receiver averaging under 15 yards per catch doesn't move a season-long number, and if any book nudges it, that's an overreaction to fade rather than follow.
Watch Monday's inactive list for Evans and Kirk. That single document — not the press conference — determines whether the 49ers have a legitimate WR1 or a room of chain-movers.
