This is the best news the 49ers have gotten all month. Kittle is Brock Purdy's go-to target over the middle, and McCaffrey is the engine of the entire offense. Getting both on the field together — even in a limited capacity — changes what San Francisco can do in the opener.
For fantasy, Kittle's activation doesn't mean he'll play, but it's a major step in that direction. If he's active against the Rams, he's a starting-caliber tight end with real touchdown upside. The risk is his workload; coming off an Achilles, the 49ers might cap his snaps. That makes him a flex/streaming option in single-TE leagues, but a high-upside play in DFS if his salary is depressed.
McCaffrey's return is equally significant. He's a pass-catching back who makes the 49ers' offense much harder to defend. His presence on the practice field suggests he's past whatever kept him out, and that's a relief for any fantasy manager who invested an early pick in him.
The next checkpoint is Wednesday's injury report. If Kittle is a full participant, we can assume he's on track for Week 1. If he's limited, the decision gets murkier. But the PUP activation itself is a loud signal: the 49ers want their star tight end on the field when the games count.
