Yahoo dropped a Week 2 bust list on Sept. 16: five players to bench or fade. Here's the structural problem with the entire genre, and with this list specifically.
The evidence base for every name on it is one football game.
Week 1 is the noisiest data the NFL produces. Defenses are running unscouted looks. Veterans are on snap counts. Somebody's WR3 scored twice because a safety slipped. A bust column published ahead of the Week 2 slate is, at best, a matchup piece wearing a stats costume. At worst it's a box-score echo — it tells you who already burned you, which is not the same as who will burn you next.
So what do you do with it? Use it as a tiebreaker, not a verdict. If you're choosing between two players you had ranked within a round of each other in August, and one of them shows up on a bench-or-fade list, sit that one. That's the whole value. Take the free coin-flip resolution and move on.
Do not do this: bench a player you spent a premium pick on because he posted a dud in Week 1. Draft capital encodes a role and a talent level that one game cannot overwrite. The manager who sits his best receiver in Week 2 on the strength of a bust column is donating his season to the guy who autodrafted.
I'm not re-litigating the five names here, because the names aren't the point. What would change my mind on any of them is a role change, not a bad line. If a player's snaps or routes collapsed in Week 1, that's not variance — that's a demotion, and the bust label is earned. Fade the demotion. If he ran his normal route tree and the targets just didn't come, that's noise, and noise regresses. Start the noise.
One caveat that cuts the other way: if a flagged player's Week 2 matchup is a genuine mismatch — a shutdown corner, a defensive front that erases his only path to touches — that's real information independent of Week 1, and I'll take the fade.
The date is the tell. Published Sept. 16, before a single Week 2 snap. Nobody has new information yet. So treat the list as a schedule and matchup filter, keep your drafted starters, and let everyone else hand you the win.
