Vikings Bench Carson Wentz at 2-0, Hand the Job Back to Kyler Murray
Carson Wentz did exactly what a backup quarterback is supposed to do, and it cost him the job anyway. Minnesota is 2-0 to open the 2026 season, and the Vikings are going back to Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback in Week 3, per Pro Football Network.
The win column isn't why this is happening. The box score is. Wentz finished 11-of-20 for 143 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, three sacks taken, a 31.5 QBR and a 77.7 passer rating. That's a caretaker's line attached to a win built on Aaron Jones Sr. grinding 23 carries for 105 yards. Minnesota didn't win through the air in that game. It won with the passing game staying out of the way, which is a fine short-term plan and an untenable long-term one when you have a starter who can actually stress a defense.
Here's the fantasy read, and it's a real one.
Justin Jefferson is the buy-low. He caught 3 of 6 targets for 55 yards, a 30% target share in a 20-attempt passing game. Six targets is the ceiling math, not Jefferson's problem, and a quarterback change that opens up the intermediate and deep middle is the single best thing that could happen to his weekly floor. If a frustrated Jefferson manager in your league is shopping him after back-to-back quiet lines, that's the trade to make this week.
Jordan Addison is the caution flag. Five targets, two catches, 21 yards. He's running with the starters and getting looks, but the efficiency isn't there yet. Hold in deeper leagues, bench in shallow ones until the connection with Murray shows up in a box score.
T.J. Hockenson stays a streamer. Four targets, three catches, 29 yards. Fine. Not a difference-maker at the position.
Jones is the one piece the switch shouldn't touch. Twenty-three carries is a workhorse number, and the Vikings just showed they'll lean on it. Murray's mobility changes the math inside the 10-yard line more than it changes Jones's early-down role.
Murray himself is the add if he's somehow sitting on your wire. The passing volume was capped at 20 attempts in that game. It won't stay there.
The 2-0 start is real, and it's mostly defensive: Blake Cashman posted 10 tackles and a sack, Dallas Turner got home twice, Byron Murphy Jr. picked one off. That unit is why Minnesota can afford to hand the offense back to Murray without panicking about a loss or two while he shakes off the rust.
My call: the Vikings are a better team in Week 3 than they were in Week 2, and Jefferson's fantasy managers are about to find out how much better.
