Titans Rookie Fernando Carmona Out With Injury as 0-3 Start Turns Ugly
The Titans are 0-3, and now they're banged up too.
Rookie Fernando Carmona is out with an injury, the fallout from a Week 3 loss to the New York Giants that the reporting around it described as insulting. Yahoo Sports did not specify the nature of the injury or a timeline for his return, which is its own kind of bad news in late September: no timeline usually means nobody in the building knows yet.
The box score from Sunday explains the mood. Cam Ward completed 23 of 36 passes for 181 yards, one touchdown and one interception, a 5.0 average per attempt and a 46.8 QBR. That is a rookie quarterback throwing short, throwing often, and turning it over anyway. Tony Pollard ran 17 times for 74 yards, a healthy 4.4 average, and got zero touchdowns out of it. Calvin Ridley was targeted once and caught nothing. Chimere Dike put two balls on the ground and lost one, which is the specific kind of mistake that decides a game nobody was going to win comfortably.
Jeffery Simmons did his job. Ten tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss. One defensive tackle cannot drag a team that can't finish drives.
The context makes this worse, not better. Tennessee lost to the Jets in Week 1, dropped a last-second game to Philadelphia in Week 2, and went into Sunday with the Giants framed as a near-must-win. Losing it means the rookie quarterback is now learning on the job in a season that is already functionally over, and losing a rookie body on top of that shrinks the margin even further.
Here's my read. The Titans' problem isn't Carmona's absence in isolation. It's that an 0-3 team with a first-year passer has no cushion for any injury, and every week they burn reps on survival instead of development, the rebuild gets a year longer. Tennessee needed this season to be about Ward's growth. Instead it's about damage control, and Carmona is the newest name on that list.
