The Houston Texans have encountered a minor setback in their 2026 draft class as rookie tight end Marlin Klein sustained a hamstring tweak during this year's organized team activities (OTAs). According to Texans insider Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Klein's injury is not considered long-term, but the team is proceeding cautiously with the second-round pick out of Michigan.

This early discomfort is the first noticeable bump for the Texans' promising rookie class during what has otherwise been a smooth spring. Although hamstring issues during spring workouts are not unusual--especially for rookies acclimating to the NFL's pace and physical demands--the timing still poses a challenge for Klein's development trajectory.

Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 250 pounds, Klein fits the mold of the modern Y-tight end. He is expected to contribute not only as a receiver working the middle of the field but also as a key blocker in the run game. The Texans' general manager, Nick Caserio, emphasized the team's commitment to improving its rushing attack this season, a plan Klein is built to support.

"We're gonna run the football this year," Caserio said at a press conference on June 1. "It's an area that we felt like we wanted to improve."

Klein, taken 59th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, was seen as a player who could eventually become the successor to veteran tight end Dalton Schultz. Schultz, who has 82 receptions for 777 yards and three touchdowns in the 2025 season, remains the undisputed starter and has developed strong chemistry with quarterback C.J. Stroud. Nonetheless, Schultz is in his ninth NFL season, and the Texans are preparing their future at the position.

The tight end room beyond Schultz is competitive but lacks definitive separation among the contenders. Notable players include Cade Stover, a 2024 fourth-round pick who caught 12 passes for 76 yards last year, Foster Moreau, recently acquired from New Orleans with modest production, and other contributors such as Brevin Jordan and Layne Pryor.

Klein's injury, though minor, threatens to cost him valuable practice reps during crucial periods of team integration. Missing time during OTAs means fewer opportunities to learn the playbook, build timing with Stroud, and demonstrate his value to the coaching staff. Meanwhile, players like Stover and Moreau continue gaining experience and solidifying their roles.

For rookies, missing spring repetitions can have long-lasting impacts. Hamstring injuries can linger even after the initial pain subsides, affecting confidence in speed, cutting ability, and route running--all vital skills for a tight end expected to be both a blocker and a receiver.

Despite the injury, the Texans are adopting a patient approach. As Caserio stated, "We don't put any timelines on anybody. The players ultimately determine what the timeline is." This philosophy reflects a cautious optimism, balancing the need to preserve player health with the high stakes of preparing for a playoff-contending season.

Stroud, speaking earlier this week, voiced encouragement about the team's overall progress. "I think we're trending up, we're getting better," he said. "Every year I get better at something, every year I learn something."

Klein's development hinges on whether he can maximize his preparation once he returns to the field. The Texans hold $27.72 million in salary cap space, allowing them flexibility in managing player health and roster decisions. However, the competitive nature of the tight end room means that every missed day translates to opportunity gained by others.

The organization views Klein as a high-upside developmental prospect who ideally will evolve into a centerpiece of their offensive identity. The Texans' physical and run-focused style begins with the trenches and extends to the tight ends, making Klein's full recovery and integration an important factor in future success.

As Klein rehabs, the team will monitor his progress carefully, managing his return to contact drills and gameplay with the long-term season in mind. While not a crisis, the hamstring tweak represents a cautionary flag early in Klein's rookie campaign.

Ultimately, the Texans remain committed to building a tough, physical roster that can sustain their playoff aspirations. Klein's health and readiness will be a key storyline this offseason as Houston continues to assemble the pieces necessary for sustained success.

For now, Marlin Klein's status is a reminder of both the physical toll football demands and the challenges rookies face transitioning to the NFL. The team and fans alike hope to see him return stronger and ready to claim his role in the Texans' offense come training camp.
