The Estate of Paul G. Allen just finalized the largest transaction in American sports history. On July 11, 2026, the estate confirmed the Seattle Seahawks have been sold to the Khosla family for a staggering $9.612 billion.

This price shatters every previous NFL franchise sale--and every American sports team sale--by a wide margin. For comparison, the Denver Broncos sold for $4.65 billion in 2022, and the Washington Commanders fetched $6.05 billion in 2023. The Seahawks' price tag nearly doubles the Broncos' figure and surpasses the Commanders by more than 58%.

This landmark deal redefines what an NFL franchise is worth.

Neeru Khosla will be the controlling owner, according to multiple reports. That designation is critical. NFL ownership rules require a single controlling owner who holds at least 30% equity, and Neeru will fulfill that role. With this, she becomes one of the very few women to hold majority ownership in an NFL franchise.

Her husband, Vinod Khosla, a billionaire venture capitalist and co-founder of Sun Microsystems, is also part of the ownership group. However, he faces a notable complication: he currently holds a limited partnership stake in the San Francisco 49ers.

The NFL maintains strict cross-ownership rules prohibiting any individual or family from holding equity in more than one franchise simultaneously. To complete the Seahawks acquisition, Vinod Khosla must divest his 49ers interest. This is a confirmed requirement, not speculation. The NFL will not approve the sale until the divestiture is complete.

The deal remains pending final approval from NFL owners. Such a vote requires at least three-quarters (24 of 32) of the franchise owners to agree. While franchise sale approvals are traditionally routine once the league's finance committee endorses the deal, the record-breaking price and cross-ownership complexity with an NFC West rival make this a vote to watch closely.

NFL owners typically scrutinize the source of funds, the debt structure, ownership group makeup, and the character of the controlling owner. The Khosla family's financial profile is robust. Neeru Khosla holds a PhD in chemistry and co-founded the Khosla Foundation. Combined with Vinod's venture capital success, the group has the resources and reputation to clear these hurdles.

Still, the involvement with two NFC West teams--the Seahawks and 49ers--creates optics and competition concerns, even once Vinod exits his 49ers stake. The NFL's constitution explicitly forbids any owner from any direct financial link to another club. This sale will heighten attention on maintaining competitive integrity.

Selling from a position of strength, the Paul G. Allen estate passes stewardship of one of the NFL's most stable franchises. The Seahawks play in a 72,000-seat stadium less than 25 years old and enjoy a consistent sellout fan base. Effective drafting and quarterback development are hallmarks of their recent success.

In the 2025 season, quarterback Sam Darnold led the offense with 4,048 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, while wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba posted an exceptional 1,793 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns on 119 catches. These performances underscore the team's strong on-field product heading into the new ownership era.

The $9.612 billion price reflects both this stability and the broader market's perception of NFL franchise value. Media rights, gambling partnerships, and international growth have propelled valuations to levels unthinkable a decade ago. The Khoslas are clearly betting the trend continues upward.

For Seahawks fans, the immediate impact is minimal. Ownership changes rarely affect the coaching staff or roster overnight. General Manager John Schneider remains in place, and Head Coach Mike Macdonald is entering his second season. Training camp will open later this month with the same personnel and playbook.

The long-term implications merit attention.

New ownership often ushers in financial and strategic shifts. The Allen estate's approach was patient and competitive; the Khosla family's philosophy remains untested in NFL ownership. Their decisions will shape the franchise's trajectory.

Currently, the Seahawks have approximately $25.49 million in salary cap space with only about $520,000 in dead money, providing a clean cap sheet suitable for maneuvering. This flexibility enables potential contract extensions for stars like Darnold or Smith-Njigba and strategic spending to strengthen the roster.

Seattle also holds full draft capital for the 2027 NFL Draft. After selecting eight players in 2026, including first-round running back Jadarian Price, the team's future resources are intact. A motivated new ownership group can capitalize on these assets to sustain success.

This historic sale is a victory for the Seahawks franchise. The $9.612 billion valuation validates the foundation built by the Allen estate and places Seattle firmly among the NFL's elite ownership groups, comparable to franchises like the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots.

The cross-ownership hurdle with the 49ers is a singular complication but one that appears manageable. How the Khoslas manage this transition, preserve competitive advantage, and continue franchise growth will be the true test.

The next 12 months will be critical. If the new owners maintain continuity by supporting John Schneider and Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks can remain NFC West contenders despite a tough division with the 49ers, Rams, and Cardinals all boasting strong rosters. If the Khoslas overhaul the front office prematurely or the team falters, the goodwill gained from this historic sale may dissipate rapidly.

For now, the Khosla family has made a landmark investment--the largest ever for an NFL franchise--illustrating tremendous confidence in the Seahawks' future. The NFL owners' vote to finalize this transaction is imminent, marking the beginning of a bold new chapter for Seattle football.
