Tory Horton is back. Macdonald said it plainly — "great week of practice excited to see him play" — and that was about the only thing said plainly. The 30 seconds that followed matter more for fantasy: Macdonald declined to define a role, declined to rank a receiver room that now holds four NFL-caliber mouths, and declined to put a date on Sam Darnold's return. Seattle's passing game is a volume question with no answer, and Horton is the newest variable in it, not a solution to it.
The praise was about work, not workload
Macdonald on Horton: "great week of practice excited to see him play." Note what's absent — no rotation promise, no package, no snap estimate. "Excited to see him play" is evaluation language, not deployment language. Coaches who have a job for a returning player usually name it, because it settles the room. Macdonald didn't.
The stat line explains the hedge. Horton's 2025: 8 games, 13 catches, 161 yards, 5 touchdowns. That's roughly 1.6 catches a game and a touchdown on 38% of his receptions. Nobody sustains a 38% touchdown-per-catch rate; it's the signature of a red-zone and shot-play role, not a route runner earning targets. Fifth-round receivers do break out — Tyreek Hill and Stefon Diggs were both fifth-rounders — but they got there by growing target share. Horton's Year 2 growth is blocked by healthy peers, not unlocked by them. Treat the five scores as a role description, not a projection.
The follow-up question was the tell
Literally the next question was the squeeze: all these receivers, plus tight ends who need snaps. Macdonald: "operate our whole offense no matter who's on the field." That's a coach refusing to name a pecking order, plus a reminder that any offense dependent on one player is one a defense can attack.
For fantasy that reads as a cap, not a boost. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the only locked-in volume player in the room — 119 catches, 1,793 yards, 10 touchdowns in 2025. Cooper Kupp is in Year 10, coming off 47-593-2. Rashid Shaheed caught 44 balls for 499 yards and 2 scores in nine games in New Orleans before arriving. AJ Barner's 52-519-6 at tight end is its own claim on targets. Four established mouths, one ball, and Macdonald just said the answer is schematic flexibility rather than feeding anyone. Horton's return mostly threatens WR3/WR4 snaps and the shape of three-receiver personnel — a real cap on Kupp's and Shaheed's weeks, and a ceiling on Horton's, not a floor under it.
The part that actually moves money
The reporter asked about Darnold's rehab timeline three different ways. Macdonald: "I'm not sure but I'm optimistic. Let's put it that way." No date, and "let's put it that way" is a hedge, not a timeline.
On the quarterback who did handle the week, Macdonald offered: "very process oriented, cool. Did a lot of great things." Answering a production question with a process answer is the tell that the production wasn't the story. Read straight: Lock ran the offense, and Darnold's return has no publicly stated date.
That matters because Darnold was the entire ceiling in 2025 — 323-of-477, 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns against 14 picks. Jalen Milroe, in Year 2 on the depth chart, has three career games, zero pass attempts and 4 rush yards; he's a package player, not a threat to Lock. So Horton returns into a passing game whose volume and efficiency are both unresolved. A returning red-zone receiver behind an unsettled quarterback is a touchdown dart, not a target bet. Macdonald even hinted at the structure — "certain things you want for certain guys" — which is scripted usage, not volume.
What to watch: snap count and the injury report. If Horton clears roughly a third of offensive snaps, that scripted package is real and he's a red-zone lottery ticket with deep-league flex appeal. Under 20% and he's a DFS-only GPP dart. And watch Darnold's designation — the -3.5 at DraftKings and the +1000 Super Bowl price at DraftKings, FanDuel, BetRivers and BetOnline are both priced as if the 4,000-yard version of this offense is coming back. Macdonald wouldn't say when it does.
