Those two prices describe different games. The moneyline says San Francisco wins. The number says San Francisco wins comfortably. Miami only needs the second of those to be wrong, and that is the entire case for Dolphins +12.5, our best bet here.
The form is lopsided and I won't pretend otherwise. San Francisco is 1-0 after winning 27-7 at the Los Angeles Rams: 27 points for, 7 against, +20 differential. Miami is 0-1 after losing 13-27 at the Las Vegas Raiders: 13 for, 27 against, -14. One defense allowed 7. The other allowed 27. One week is a small sample. It is also the only sample that exists, and the 49ers' side of it is better.
The strongest argument against our position sits inside San Francisco's own Week 1: a +20 differential, wider than the 12.5 it lays at home. A team that just did that on the road against a division opponent is a reasonable favorite to do something like it again. The book is not wrong about who wins this game. It is the margin where the certainty thins out. Twelve and a half is the largest ask on the board, and it requires San Francisco to keep scoring after the result is settled. Nothing in San Francisco's Week 1 result says it needs to score again in the fourth quarter of a game it has already won.
That puts the decision on Miami's offense, which is the uncomfortable part. The Dolphins scored 13 in Week 1. Thirteen points is not a formula for staying inside a double-digit number, and if Miami repeats its opener the ticket is gone well before the fourth quarter. That is the honest downside, and it is the one I keep coming back to.
Miami also travels. It opened in Las Vegas and now crosses the country for a 16:25 local kickoff at Levi's Stadium, which is the least comfortable version of this trip available.
The matchup that decides this bet is not a receiver against a corner. It is San Francisco's appetite for a fourth-quarter score in a game already decided, against a Miami offense that has to turn Week 1's 13 points into something closer to a normal afternoon. The 49ers controlled their opener from the early going. Miami's 27 points allowed is the number that has to come down for the +12.5 to have a chance.
