The 49ers spent Saturday rebuilding the back end of their defensive line, and the roster mechanics tell you why: somebody has to take those snaps.
San Francisco added three defensive linemen off the practice squad, including Fehoko Jr. at 6-foot-5 and 267 pounds, and worked out 34-year-old edge rusher Matt Judon. The active-roster spot came from Demarcus Robinson, who was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Robinson will miss at least four games, and the San Francisco Chronicle reported a three-to-six-week timeline before the move was made.
Losing a receiver is a depth problem. Three simultaneous practice-squad promotions along the defensive front is something closer to an emergency. Practice-squad call-ups are rotational and special-teams bodies by definition, and the 49ers just needed three of them in one afternoon.
Which makes the other Saturday headline the one that actually matters. According to the Press Democrat, San Francisco kept Nick Bosa off injured reserve. That's the difference between a one-week patch and a season-altering hole. The team apparently weighed the IR question seriously enough that it got reported, and it declined. Good news, and fragile news.
Judon fits the pattern of how the Shanahan-era 49ers have handled pass-rush shortages. They prefer to build the line through the draft, then rent help when the rotation thins, and the clearest precedent is the 2023 deadline trade for Chase Young. Judon, whose career began in Baltimore and ran through New England, would be a situational rusher at 34, not an every-down answer. He was worked out, not signed, and those are different things.
Here's the read. Three practice-squad linemen replace snaps. They don't replace pressure. If Bosa's issue costs him one game, the 49ers bought time cheaply and Judon's workout stays a workout. If it costs him three, the front office should have Judon on a plane before the weekend, because San Francisco's entire defensive architecture starts with winning the line of scrimmage, and there's no version of this roster that does that with practice-squad elevations alone.
My call: sign Judon if Bosa misses more than one game. Warm bodies hold a roster together. They don't hold a pocket.
