Sam Darnold will start Sunday against the Washington Commanders. That's the good news out of Seattle. It's also the only good news.
The Seahawks ruled out both starting safeties, Julian Love and Ty Okada, meaning the defending Super Bowl champions will play with their third and fourth safeties on the field for most of the afternoon. Okada was listed with a hamstring injury on the team's report.
Darnold missed Seattle's last game with a glute injury he suffered in the season opener. Drew Lock took that start, the 29th of his career, and the Seahawks survived it. Getting the starter back matters. This is a quarterback who won a Lombardi Trophy in his first season in Seattle, and the offense is built around what he does off-schedule.
But the safety losses are the more interesting problem, because they're the kind that doesn't show up on a box score until it does. Safeties in this defense aren't just deep help. They're the players who communicate coverage checks, fill the alley against the run, and let the coordinator disguise pressure. Replace both and you don't get a slightly worse secondary. You get a different defense, one that has to simplify.
History says September is when championship depth gets stress-tested. No team has repeated as Super Bowl champion since the 2003 and 2004 Patriots, and the pattern in that gap is rarely about the stars. It's about the back end of the roster absorbing injuries in Weeks 3 and 4 while everyone waits for the contender to look like a contender again.
Seattle is a defending champion playing a Commanders team that doesn't need to be great to exploit a patchwork secondary. The matchup to watch isn't Darnold's arm. It's whether Washington can force Seattle's safeties into coverage down the seam and make them tackle in space.
My read: Darnold's return is worth more than the safety losses cost, but only if the pass rush gets home. Give a quarterback time against two backup safeties and no amount of Darnold will outscore it. I'll take Seattle Sunday, and I'll take the under on this defense looking like last year's until Love and Okada are back.
