Saints Lose Kelvin Banks Jr. for at Least 10 Weeks, and the Real Cost Is Tyler Shough's Blind Side
Tyler Shough's most recent line: 27-of-34, 252 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, a 107.4 passer rating. Clean. He was also sacked three times for 19 yards, and that part is about to get worse.
Yahoo Sports reported Monday that Saints left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. is expected to miss significant time, at least 10 weeks. Ten weeks from late September runs into December.
New Orleans has been here at this position before. In 2018 the Saints lost left tackle Terron Armstead for roughly 3-4 weeks with a pectoral injury and patched it. That was a three-week problem. This is a season-shaping one, and the gap between those two absences matters more than the parallel does.
Start with what the offense actually was. Alvin Kamara carried nine times for 15 yards. Travis Etienne Jr. got eight carries for 25. The ground game produced nothing, and it produced nothing with Banks on the field. Losing him doesn't break a running game that was already broken. It removes the best available chance of fixing it.
The real cost sits on Shough's blind side. Three sacks for 19 yards is survivable. Ten weeks of a replacement tackle against edge rushers paid to hunt quarterbacks is not, unless the Saints change how they call the game. That means chips from the backfield, tight ends staying in to help, and more of what already worked: Chris Olave caught eight for 86 with a touchdown, Juwan Johnson four for 66, Devaughn Vele five for 64. All of it came in the short and intermediate areas, where the ball comes out fast and the left tackle's job gets easier.
Pete Werner's day on the other side (11 tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, a quarterback hit) is the kind of line that wins games when the offense holds up its end. It won't hold up if the protection plan is hope.
My read: the Saints should treat the next 10 weeks as a protection project, not a salvage job. Keep Shough upright, lean on the quick game, and accept the run game isn't coming back until Banks does. Ask a replacement tackle to hold up one-on-one across 40 dropbacks a week and that pretty passer rating won't survive a month.
