The Baltimore Ravens have officially turned the page on one of the most successful eras in franchise history, embarking on a new journey under first-time head coach Jesse Minter. The team announced the hiring on January 22, 2026, signing the 42-year-old to a five-year contract. Minter replaces John Harbaugh, who was fired after 18 seasons that included a Super Bowl XLVII victory and consistent playoff contention.
Minter arrives in Baltimore after a highly successful stint as the defensive coordinator for the University of Michigan Wolverines, where he oversaw one of the nation’s most dominant defenses. His schematic versatility, focus on fundamentals, and player development were key factors in the Ravens’ decision. The hire signals a commitment to maintaining the organization’s defensive identity while seeking new offensive innovation.
“The opportunity to lead the Baltimore Ravens is an incredible honor,” Minter said in the team’s release. “This is a franchise built on toughness, intelligence, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I am excited to get to work with our players and build a staff that will make our fans proud.”
Minter’s immediate to-do list is extensive. His primary task is assembling a coaching staff, a process already underway. He must also forge a relationship with franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson, who is under contract for the 2026 season with a significant $74.5 million cap hit, and address a roster coming off an 8-9 season that saw the team miss the playoffs for the first time in several years.
The transition marks the end of the Harbaugh era, which began in 2008. Team owner Steve Bisciotti expressed confidence in Minter’s vision for the future. “Jesse embodies the competitive spirit and football IQ we value,” Bisciotti stated. “We conducted a thorough search and believe he is the right leader to guide the Ravens back to championship football.”
