The tell wasn't the ruling out. It was the timeline McVay volunteered. Donald “won't make the trip” to Australia, but McVay expects him ready “sooner rather than later” and let “week two” hang in the air before retreating into no-expectations coachspeak. That is the sound of a scheduled one-game ramp, not an open-ended absence — and it makes every current Rams price the last one that doesn't include the most disruptive interior rusher of his era. The Rams already sit near the top of Super Bowl boards (+700/+750/+800 across FanDuel, BetOnlineAG, BetRivers, DraftKings). The sharper movement comes when weekly defensive lines start assuming No. 99 is on the field.
McVay basically named the date
(a) Asked about Donald's status, McVay said: “I think he'll be ready to go sooner rather than later,” adding that Donald won't make the trip and could return “whether that's week two.” (b) Coaches only volunteer a target when they're confident in it. Donald is two years removed from football, so the team framed this as a ramp — kept him off a 16-hour flight to train — not an injury scare. McVay's language (“rusty,” not “hurt”) tells you the concern is timing and hand fits, not his body. (c) Implication: if you're adding the Rams D/ST in fantasy, or eyeing any week-to-week market that assumes a Donald-less front, the pre-activation price is the discount. The repricing moment is his first full 11-on-11 practice back — and McVay just told you it's coming soon.
The 2017 precedent is the plan
(a) McVay reached for his own history: “he didn't play in that opening game against the Colts,” he recalled, and then Donald “ended up playing really well after that.” (b) In McVay's first season, Donald's holdout cost him Week 1 — and the coach is explicitly using that as his template for a two-year layoff. The historical read: Donald's absences have never required a multi-week re-acclimation once the games count. (c) Betting implication: treat whatever the 49ers do to this front in Australia as a Donald-less sample. If San Francisco protects well on Sunday, don't drag that conclusion into Week 2. The next-gen pass rush — Donald plus Myles Garrett — is a different unit than the one that plays this opener, and the market will price that split once it's official.
Garrett's geometry changes when Donald returns
(a) “Feel ready for the season opener,” Myles Garrett said, describing “a whole bunch of opportunities out there for us” along the line. (b) Garrett is right, but the opportunity set is different this week than it will be in Week 2. Without Donald, San Francisco's protection can slide toward Garrett with no interior threat to punish it. With Donald, offenses must send help inside — leaving Garrett on isolated edges. That's a schematic upgrade to his sack ceiling that doesn't exist yet. (c) Implication: Garrett is a top-tier DL1 in fantasy regardless, and his Week 2+ sack props should shorten the moment Donald is activated. Any full-season Garrett or defensive futures price you can take before that report drops is the last favorable one.
No Ram inherits Donald's snaps — the asset is the unit
(a) Asked about Braden Fiske's expanded role, McVay redirected to the group: “five, six guys that play and play meaningful snaps,” naming Fiske, Kobie Turner, Poona Ford, Tyler Davis, and Ty Hamilton. (b) Translation: Donald's workload doesn't transfer to any single player. Fiske's role grows, but in a rotation — which caps the IDP upside of any individual replacement. McVay's praise of Ty Hamilton (“really good job”) reads as rotational endorsement, not a snap-share promise. (c) Fantasy read: don't chase the replacement on waivers. The buy is the D/ST itself, which remains viable this week as a short favorite (DraftKings lists the Rams between -2.5 and -3) and becomes a weekly top-tier unit once Donald slots back in.
