The Raiders are getting Brock Bowers back. The real question is how much of him.
Bowers is expected to make his season debut Sunday, per Yahoo Sports. The Raiders tight end hasn't played since Dec. 21, 2025, and the path back ran through the same knee that cost him five games last season with a PCL sprain and bone bruise, per NBC Sports. He had knee surgery. He missed Week 1 against Miami. He was still absent from practice on Sept. 17. Las Vegas spent the opening month asking who fills the void, with Athlon's list landing on Jeanty, Bech, Tucker and Mayer.
The easy read goes like this: Bowers is back, so the offense is back. That's the consensus, and it's too clean.
Nobody who sat out since Dec. 21, who had surgery on that knee, and who was still missing practices in mid-September walks into a full snap count. Tight end is the position where a compromised player hides least. You can't use him as a decoy and get value. Blocking, releases off the line, contested catches: all of it runs through the knee.
The return story also skips a second thing. The Raiders spent a month building an offense that didn't feature him, and whatever they found in that stretch doesn't get thrown out because he's active again. Mayer, in particular, has a role now.
Nor should it disappear. The mistake teams make with a returning star is treating activation as restoration. Bowers' value to Las Vegas is a 17-game arc, not a Week 1 statement. If the Raiders are smart, Sunday is a ramp: limited routes, situational usage, and enough two-tight-end work that he isn't asked to win one-on-one from the slot on 40 snaps.
My verdict: expect Bowers active and deliberately underused. If he clears 70 percent of offensive snaps in his first game back, someone in that building is being reckless with the best pass catcher on the roster. More likely he plays around half the snaps, Mayer stays involved, and the real Bowers shows up in October. That's the correct call even if Sunday's box score looks thin.
