Three moves, one transaction, and the Eagles told us more about their special teams than about their offensive line.
Philadelphia placed guard Landon Dickerson on injured reserve, signed wide receiver Britain Covey from the practice squad to the active roster, and signed tight end Josiah Deguara to the practice squad.
The consensus read will be that losing Dickerson for a minimum of four games is the story. It's a real loss. He's a starting guard, and the interior of Philadelphia's line now has a hole the next man up has to fill in a division where pressure comes from everywhere. But Dickerson wasn't the move that revealed a plan.
Covey was. He got elevated from the practice squad in Week 1 to return punts against Washington, and the Eagles decided they'd rather carry him on the 53 than burn an elevation on him every Sunday. That's a small accounting decision with a bigger signal: Philadelphia treats its return game as a permanent need, not a weekly patch. Once a player like Covey is on the active roster, he can't be shuttled back down without clearing waivers, and the team just accepted that risk.
Deguara takes the practice squad spot Covey vacated. A tight end who can work as a fullback gives the Eagles an in-house body for heavy packages instead of hunting the waiver wire midseason.
So the roster math is settled for now. What isn't: who absorbs Dickerson's snaps, and whether the line holds up long enough for his return to count as a bonus rather than a rescue.
My verdict: the Eagles got this right, and the Covey promotion is the part that will look obvious by December. The Dickerson hole is the part that decides whether they're still playing then.
