Pat Surtain II walked off the field Sunday in San Francisco, and the Broncos' defense walked off without the player their coordinator builds the week around.

The team called it an ankle injury; some reports described a lower right leg issue. Either way, Surtain left the game against the 49ers early and did not return, and Denver lost 24-14. The Broncos also lost their other starting cornerback in the same game, which turns a bad afternoon into a depth-chart emergency.

What makes this more than a next-man-up story is how plainly Vance Joseph has framed Surtain's role. Denver's defensive coordinator has said Surtain is the starting point for the defensive plan each week. He's also said his willingness to send five or more rushers is dictated in part by "what we do with Pat and how we create the rush and coverage" behind it. That's not a compliment. That's a schematic dependency. Joseph can blitz because Surtain erases the receiver left alone on the back end. Take Surtain off the field and those calls become gambles instead of leverage.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Surtain could miss multiple weeks, which is the number that matters most here. Denver can survive a half against a backup receiver. Two or three games is a different math problem, and it lands on a defense that already asks Alex Singleton to clean up a lot of ground (14 total tackles Sunday).

My read, and I'll own it: until Surtain returns, this unit stops looking like a top defense and starts looking like an average one, because the aggressive calls that made it distinctive were bought with his coverage. Joseph will have to choose between blitzing and protecting a thinner secondary, and he won't get both. The Broncos' margin this season was never the offense. It was the guy who just limped off.

Denver should plan as if he's out at least two weeks and adjust the pressure menu accordingly.
