Canales' 'Commitment' to Bryce Young Is for One Season — and That's the Problem

The Panthers coach says he's committed to Bryce Young in 2026. Good for him. That is the lowest possible bar. A one-year commitment is not a franchise vote of confidence. It's a stay of execution.

Speaking Tuesday on Stephen A. Smith's SiriusXM show, Canales reiterated that Young will be Carolina's quarterback for the 2026 season. Then came the pivot. Any talk of a long-term extension? That's front office territory, per Canales, who said his focus remains on the quarterback's on-field development.

This is the classic coach's dodge. And it's a revealing one.

Young is under contract through 2027 via his fifth-year option. So the "commitment" for 2026 is not a commitment at all. It's just the current state of the roster. The real decision, the one that shapes the next half-decade, is the extension. And Canales, the man who works with Young every day, won't touch it.

He had plenty of praise. He cited Young's development and composure in critical moments. But when the conversation turned to whether Young is Carolina's franchise quarterback, Canales deferred to the front office. That's not backing. That's punting.

Now, there's a charitable read: coaches don't negotiate contracts. It's not his lane. But watch the structure. Canales has hitched his reputation to Young's revival, and he's still not saying, "He's our guy, pay him." That leaves the door open, at least a crack, for the front office to decide otherwise.

The takeaway is not that Young is on thin ice. It's that the Panthers are keeping their options open. For a quarterback, that's the problem. Every week without an extension, the outside noise grows. Canales has given Young a one-year vote of confidence. The front office's silence will be the real verdict.
