Nick Bosa's return is the Week 1 story. Everything else is supporting detail.
ESPN reports Bosa is set to play in Thursday's 49ers season opener against the Rams, his first game since tearing his ACL in Week 3 last season. George Kittle is on track to join him. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said Kittle 'looks good' with two more practices before the game.
The Rams and 49ers open the 2026 season in Australia. That adds travel and noise, but the arrangement between the two teams is still the same. These are division rivals, and Bosa has been the player on the field who tilts the pass rush. Seeing him back less than a year after his knee buckled changes how the Rams must approach their protection.
Kittle's status matters, too. If he plays, San Francisco's offense gets its best run blocker and a receiving threat who stresses the middle of the field. Kubiak's 'looks good' is the strongest signal yet that Kittle is more than day-to-day.
The broader history is this. ACL tears used to cost edge rushers an entire season, often more. Bosa tore his last September and is expected to walk onto the field for Week 1. That isn't remarkable by modern medicine's standard, but it is notable the 49ers are willing to use him immediately in a game that counts.
My read: Bosa will not be on a snap count when the game is on the line. San Francisco did not bring him to Australia to wear a headset. If the score is close in the fourth quarter, expect Bosa to be rushing the passer with no restrictions. That is the risk and the reward of building a defense around a player like him.
