The Ravens run this drill every season. Jackson's job is to be the answer to a question nobody wants asked in week 12.
Jacksonville signed TE Brenden Bates to the practice squad. Tight end is where practice-squad depth actually gets used, because rosters dress so few of them on game day that one rolled ankle rewrites the personnel groupings. Bates is a body in a room that goes from fine to thin in a single snap.
Pittsburgh signed WR Isaiah Hodgins and DB Darius Rush to the practice squad. Two additions, two sides of the ball, and the defensive back is the one worth tracking. Practice-squad defensive backs are who get called up when a Sunday starter goes down in the second quarter and the staff needs someone who has actually practiced the coverage that week. The Steelers are buying optionality, not talent.
Miami signed LB Andre Jones Jr. off Buffalo's practice squad and LS Luke Basso to its own. The detail that matters: you cannot sign a player off another team's practice squad and stash him. Jones has to go on the 53. So Miami spent an active roster spot, and spent it taking from a division rival, which is a two-way win. Basso is long-snapper insurance, the least glamorous line on the page and the one that prevents a December catastrophe.
Cleveland signed LB Krys Barnes to the practice squad and placed LB Nathaniel Watson on practice squad/injured. That's a same-position swap in a single day, and the injured designation opens the slot right back up, so the net cost is paperwork and a playbook. Read it as the staff preferring Barnes' fit to Watson's availability, nothing more dramatic than that.
Four of these five moves are free. Miami's wasn't. A practice-squad slot costs a team nothing but a paycheck; a 53-man spot costs flexibility, and the Dolphins paid it in September to take a linebacker off the Bills. That's the only transaction on this list I'd expect to still matter in December, and it's the one that tells you Miami thinks this season is real. The rest is inventory management, and inventory only gets interesting when someone gets hurt.
