The NFL handed us three small stories Sunday with real substance underneath. A head coach gave away points and defended it. A linebacker picked a fight with an opposing coach. A player said the betting market got his team wrong. Two of those three hold up.

Klint Kubiak took a made field goal off the board in the third quarter of the Raiders' game against Kansas City. His explanation: "I don't regret it, I regret not getting a first down." That's a coach telling you he grades the process and not the result, which is the answer I want from someone whose team is chasing points. It's also the one decision in football where a perfectly good kick produces zero points, and coaches flinch at that math more than they should. The third quarter is exactly when they get conservative, and the whole edge in fourth-down decision-making comes from being willing to look wrong inside that window. Kubiak was willing. His offense didn't hold up its end. I'd rather hear a coach regret a failed conversion than regret a punt he never wanted to make.

Dre Greenlaw said he told Sean Payton to "get the f*** off the field" during a testy postgame exchange, after an emotional back-and-forth with Payton and the Denver sideline throughout and after the 24-14 win. The linebacker is a 49er, which is the part that matters. San Francisco's defense has always been built on players who treat every rep like a debt someone owes them, and that trait doesn't switch off when the clock hits zero. This costs him nothing. The league polices what it can hear on a hot mic, and a linebacker jawing at an opposing head coach is theater, not misconduct. Payton has never once walked away from that kind of microphone, and Greenlaw wasn't going to be the one who did.

Cam Skattebo called it "dumb" that the Giants were underdogs at home to Arizona. The Giants won. He's still wrong about the logic. An underdog isn't a verdict on who deserves to win, it's a price, and the road favorite in that matchup is where the casual money lands. The Cardinals were favored for reasons a single scoreboard doesn't erase. Winning one game doesn't disprove a number. A player treating the closing line as bulletin-board material is a tell about how the Giants see themselves, and good teams don't need the market's permission to expect to beat Arizona at home.

Kubiak's call was better than the reaction to it will be. Greenlaw's exchange was noise dressed as news. Skattebo confused a good Sunday with a bad line. The Raiders' process is sound; the execution has to catch up, and that's a personnel problem, not a fourth-down one.
