Giants lose Braxton Berrios to IR with foot injury, out at least four weeks
Braxton Berrios is headed to injured reserve with a foot injury, and the Giants will be without him for at least the next four weeks. He was hurt in Sunday's win over the Cardinals and left the game.
The four-week figure is the IR minimum, not a prognosis. That distinction matters for a player whose job is built on change of direction. Berrios shows up on the Giants' roster as both a wide receiver and a special teams player, which means one injury costs them depth in two phases for the price of one roster spot.
Special teams is where this bites. His value lives there, and those snaps don't get handed to a starter as a lark. Someone at the back of the 53 has to field kicks now, and the Giants have to decide whether that's a promotion for someone already on the roster or a call-up from the practice squad. They also get a roster spot back, since IR frees one. That's the only silver lining in the transaction.
The receiving room absorbs less damage. Berrios was never going to lead the team in targets, and whatever he gave the offense was rotational. But a foot injury for a receiver is its own category. Guys who have to plant and cut on a damaged foot tend to run past the timeline the team announces.
Sunday's context is worth holding onto. The Giants beat Arizona while Jacoby Brissett threw three interceptions on 35 attempts and finished with a 31.8 QBR. That was a win built on defense and field position. Field position is precisely what Berrios supplies, and precisely what the Giants now have to manufacture the hard way, in a stretch where they don't have margin to give away hidden yards.
My verdict: the Giants will take the full four games and then some. Berrios is a returner with a foot problem, and those don't resolve on a schedule. Watch who they promote to handle returns, because that answer tells you more about their depth than anything Berrios did on offense. I'll take the over on the IR window.
