Hodgins is a nice story. He's also a replaceable piece.
The Giants didn't make this move in a vacuum. They signed running back Najee Harris earlier in August. They have a receiver room with more speed and more versatility than Hodgins provides. In the box score, Hodgins managed two catches for 16 yards on four targets. The coaching staff looked at that and decided the roster spot could be better used.
That's the part the sentimental crowd misses. Keeping Hodgins because he once made plays is how rosters get stale. The Giants need players who fit the 2026 scheme and contribute on special teams. Hodgins is a boundary receiver without a defined role in this group.
The "playoff receiver" label is doing heavy lifting. It refers to a specific moment, not a sustained ceiling. The Giants are building for what's next, not re-running old highlights.
Cutting him is the unglamorous move. It won't generate headlines. It should.
