The Vikings signed P Johnny Hekker from the practice squad to the active roster on Sept. 26, 2026. In the same set of moves, they elevated OLB Kyle Van Noy and S Tavierre Thomas from the practice squad to the active roster and placed C Nick Samac on injured reserve.
Hekker handles punting and holding duties, so Minnesota's field-position game and its kicking operation both run through him now. That's a genuine football upgrade if the Vikings were staring at a replacement-level leg, but there is no fantasy decision hiding inside it. Do not start a Vikings kicker or team defense because of this signing.
Samac is the piece that could matter later. Interior offensive line depth is the resource Minnesota can least afford to burn, and an IR designation pulls a body out of that room for multiple weeks. If the starting five stays upright, this is a footnote. If it doesn't, the Vikings are one snap away from a protection problem that shows up as sacks and stuffed runs on early downs, the kind of thing that drags a running game's ceiling down without ever appearing in a box score.
On Van Noy: this is standard practice-squad mechanics, not a long-term commitment. He's a game-day elevation, and Minnesota has leaned on him enough that the roster math is starting to pinch. Worth remembering that Van Noy was out of a job in September 2023, signed to Baltimore's practice squad, and was on the Ravens' active roster three days later. Teams that wait on him tend to lose him.
Verdict: the Hekker signing is housekeeping, and I won't pretend otherwise. The Samac injury is the one I'd track. If you roster Minnesota's backfield in a deep league, the next two weeks of run-game efficiency are your tell.
