Ester's exit was a long time coming in one sense. He spent the past two seasons on Green Bay's practice squad, then joined Miami this offseason and converted from defensive tackle to guard. That move was still in progress when he suffered an injury in practice this week. The injury settlement gives the Dolphins a roster spot now and lets Ester recover on his own timeline.
Dix Jr. is the replacement body. The linebacker steps into a depth role behind Miami's established starters, and his signing reads as a special-teams play. The Dolphins would rather add a young, athletic second-level defender than wait out Ester's rehabilitation. That's a bet on coverage units and camp competition over positional need.
The immediate impact is small. Dix Jr. won't start, and the Dolphins didn't pay for a difference-maker. But late-August roster moves are about counting bodies and finding the last few players on the 53. The offensive line is suddenly thinner, and Miami will have to decide whether to bring in another blocker before the season opener.
The next two weeks will answer that. Dix Jr. gets his chance to prove he's more than a camp body. If he doesn't, the Dolphins will churn the spot again. That's the nature of this transaction window.
