Browns defensive tackle Mason Graham left Thursday night's game against Pittsburgh on the Steelers' first drive with a left knee injury. The update out of Cleveland: week-to-week with a sprained MCL and an ankle issue, per News 5 Cleveland.
That four-game sample was the problem. Graham had four sacks through three games, enough that the Beacon Journal was already treating him as a Defensive Player of the Year case. Four sacks from an interior lineman in three weeks changes a defensive coordinator's math. You don't have to blitz to collapse a pocket, and you don't have to sell out on third down to get home.
Pittsburgh's offense, for its part, ran almost entirely through Aaron Rodgers: 40 attempts, 22 completions, 299 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, five sacks taken for 30 yards. That's a 83.2 passer rating and a 49.0 QBR. Volume without efficiency. Jaylen Warren's 17 carries for 93 yards (5.5 a pop) gave the Steelers a balance Cleveland couldn't answer once its most disruptive interior defender was in the tent. DK Metcalf's five catches for 115 yards came at 23.0 per reception.
Graham wasn't the only Cleveland defensive tackle on the injury report Thursday. Mike Hall Jr. also went down and returned, per Yahoo Sports. That's the thin cushion the Browns are working with.
Week-to-week on an MCL sprain reads as one game minimum, and the schedule doesn't offer a soft landing. My read: Cleveland will lean harder on stunts and extra rushers to manufacture pressure it was getting for free from Graham, which means more stress on the secondary and more explosive plays conceded. If he misses one game, the DPOY conversation survives. If this stretches to three, it doesn't, and the Browns' pass rush numbers will tell you why before the standings do.
