Kansas City is 4-0. Patrick Mahomes isn't why, and the final score is going to convince a lot of people otherwise.

Mahomes finished 15 of 30 for 225 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, a 97.2 rating and a 65.0 QBR. That's a quarterback being carried. The thing carrying him was Kenneth Walker III, who took 22 carries for 177 yards and two touchdowns, an 8.0 average with a 76-yard long. Add Matt Araiza's five punts for 238 yards, five of them downed inside the 20, and you have the actual shape of this 30-27 win over the Raiders.

Start with the play that decided it. With 1:26 left, Araiza punted 52 yards and Xavier Nwankpa downed it at the Raiders 1. Las Vegas had to cover the length of the field. On the final snap, Kirk Cousins went short left for Michael Mayer and Nwankpa took it away at the KC 36, returning three yards to the 39 with 0:10 left. An illegal shift on Ashton Jeanty was declined. End game. The same defender who pinned the Raiders at their own 1 also ended their last possession, which is not a sentence you write about a team whose quarterback is supposed to be the story.

Look at where Mahomes' 225 yards actually lived. Tyquan Thornton caught 5 for 111 and two scores, including a 55-yarder. Xavier Worthy caught 4 for 70 on seven targets. Everybody else: Travis Kelce 2 for 15 on four targets, Noah Gray 2 for 17, Emmett Johnson 1 for 10, Jalen Royals 0 for 2 targets, Cyrus Allen 0 for 1. Mahomes carried twice for zero yards. He threw 30 times and completed half of them, and the two chunk plays to Thornton papered over an afternoon of checking down and missing. Araiza even shows up in the rushing column with one carry for 12 yards.

The Raiders lost by three, and 27 points against this defense on a day when Cousins led the passing game, Jeanty led the rushing game and Brock Bowers led the receiving game is not a moral victory. It's a data point. Mike Washington Jr. and Connor Heyward both factored into the run game. Las Vegas is 3-1 and just went the distance with the conference's last unbeaten team, and the gap between the two rosters on this particular Sunday was one punt downed at the 1 and one throw into traffic.

That's the seam in Kansas City's 4-0. Walker is not rushing for 177 yards every week. Araiza is not going to drop all five punts inside the 20 every week, and he's not going to need to, because most weeks the opposing offense won't hand him that many chances. When both of those things regress to something normal, Mahomes will have to win a game with his arm, and 15 of 30 for 225 with two of his completions doing most of the work is not evidence he's ready to.

My read: this was a special teams and running back win dressed up as a quarterback win, and the Chiefs' unbeaten record is real but rented. If Mahomes throws it 30 times again next week, Kansas City loses. He has Walker and the punt team to thank for the fact that nobody's asking yet.
