That was Friday night, after a preseason finale, one day after Jacobs was formally charged with two misdemeanors — battery and criminal damage to property — stemming from an alleged incident with a woman at his home earlier this year. Asked about the running back's future, LaFleur said, "I fully anticipate him being a member of our team."
The coach's phrasing matters. He did not say Jacobs is innocent. He did not say the team has completed an internal review. He said the Packers have no current plans to release him. Those are different statements, and the difference is the real story.
The consensus take will be that Green Bay is doing the right thing by letting the legal process play out. Fine. But "fully anticipate" is not a defense of Jacobs. It is a roster decision. The Packers are a contender in a division that runs through Detroit and Minnesota. Their running back room doesn't have a proven replacement; Jacobs is the lead back. Teams don't cut that player in August because of a charge that may or may not lead to a conviction.
LaFleur's comment is the safest thing a coach can say at this stage. It gives the organization cover. It keeps the door open. It does not commit the franchise to anything beyond the next few weeks.
