Aaron Glenn's Week 1 availability report was two lines long and mostly noise: Tim Patrick and Joe DePasci out, Kanae and Pawns doubtful. The usable signal came after, in how Glenn described the players absorbing those snaps. Read his own words and you get a rookie receiver on the rise — and a kicking job he deliberately left unresolved.
The reps ledger, not the medical report
Glenn's framing: "two guys that will be out, that'll be Joe DePasci and Tim Patrick."
DePasci is the simple one. Glenn called him "week to week" and said he wants to see him in practice next week — that's a Week 2 availability track, not a season-length absence.
The doubtful pair is where the language earns its keep. On Pawns, Glenn praised the physical — "I love where he's at when it comes to his physical" — then separated it from the workload: "he'll be docked when it comes to that."
That is not a medical designation. "Docked" is a participation penalty. Glenn is telling you an active Pawns is still a partial-snap player, because the staff hasn't seen enough padded work. On Kanae's back he offered nothing binding: "We'll see how he's going to operate today in practice." When a head coach won't commit on a back that tightened up the day before, plan for the inactive list, not a reduced role.
Concrete: neither doubtful player belongs in a lineup, and any activation should be treated as a limited snap count. Watch the 90-minute inactives.
Patrick's absence moves snaps, not targets
Patrick's last season in Jacksonville: 16 games, 15 catches, 187 yards, 3 touchdowns. That's 0.94 catches and 11.7 yards per game in year nine — a blocker with red-zone value, not a target earner. Losing him doesn't reroute Geno Smith's reads. It reroutes snaps, and the room behind Garrett Wilson (36 catches, 395 yards, 4 touchdowns in 7 games last season) is stocked with part-timers: Adonai Mitchell (9-152 in 8 games for Indianapolis), Arian Smith (7-52 across 16 games), Isaiah Williams (26-193).
Which is why Glenn's answer on the rookie out of Indiana matters. He volunteered a two-minute drill rep — a long catch down the field — and then a blocking trait: "he wants to go in and dig people out." Then the kicker: "He's going to get better and better and better as these weeks progress."
That's Omar Cooper Jr., the No. 30 pick in 2026. A first-round rookie getting praised for both the catch and the block is a three-down endorsement. Coaches don't hand out unprompted practice highlights for players they intend to park behind a ninth-year blocker. Expect Cooper ahead of Arian Smith and Isaiah Williams in the rotation, with early-down routes rather than a gadget package.
Caveat before you claim him: the pie is tiny. Geno Smith's 2025 line in Las Vegas was 448 attempts in 15 games — 29.9 passes a game — for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Breece Hall absorbed 243 carries last season. A 30-attempt offense supports one fantasy receiver, and Wilson is it. Cooper is a deep-league bench stash, and the number to track in Week 1 is route participation, not targets.
The kicking job Glenn wouldn't close
Two answers, one paragraph: "Jason will kick this week," and "I want to let this thing play out."
Glenn explained the second himself — he wants Blake Grupe to get "the proper chance," noting he arrived last week and hasn't worked with long snapper Thomas Hennessy or punter Austin McNamara. That's a head coach buying time, not running a genuine competition. Grupe's last season in New Orleans: 18-of-26 on field goals, 69.2%, 69 points.
Concrete: Jason Sanders is the only Jets kicker to roster in Week 1, and he's a legitimate streamer. Don't carry either through a bye — Glenn told you the job is open, and open kicking jobs are settled by who misses first, not by anything you can project.
