Jahmyr Gibbs, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Garrett Wilson, Geno Smith. That's the early-game fantasy leaderboard from Sunday, and the last name is the one that matters.
Three of those four were drafted to do exactly this. Gibbs, Smith-Njigba and Wilson are the names whose managers felt smug by the second quarter. Nothing changes on any of them. Start Gibbs every week he's healthy. Smith-Njigba is past the buy-low window, and anybody still treating him as a flex is a week behind. Wilson's case was never about the quarterback play around him, it was about the volume he commands anyway. A good Sunday doesn't move him up your rankings. It just confirms you leave him in.
Geno Smith is the outlier, and the composition of the list is the tell. A quarterback crashing a leaderboard otherwise owned by a running back and two receivers is a spike week, not a trend. Spike weeks at quarterback are the least repeatable thing in this game. The managers who win leagues treat them as rentals; the managers who lose them treat them as breakouts. If he does it again next Sunday I'll eat it and move him to the back end of QB1 territory. One week is a streamer's résumé, not a starting job.
Where does that leave your roster moves? Gibbs, Smith-Njigba and Wilson are start-and-forget. No trade, no benching, no overthinking matchups. Geno Smith is a streamer you don't overpay for on waivers, and if somebody in your league is trying to sell him to you as a season-long answer, decline. The same logic applies to selling: if a league mate is desperate for quarterback help and will move a real asset for Geno off one Sunday, take the deal before the next kickoff.
My verdict, and I'll own it: start the three skill players without a second thought, and let somebody else chase the quarterback. Geno Smith's owners this week are renting a hot hand. The ones who know the difference are the ones still playing in December.
