The Jacksonville Jaguars placed safety Caleb Ransaw on the reserve/injured list Tuesday, per Yahoo Sports. That is the entire transaction as reported. No injury disclosed. No corresponding signing.
Here is where I part with the room. The consensus read on a safety hitting IR in early October is that it's paperwork, a name you scroll past on the way to the injury report that actually matters. Fine. Except the headline on this one carries a second clause: "other moves." That's the part that matters, and it's the part nobody printed.
The reserve/injured designation carries a minimum four-game absence under league rules, so this is not a one-week patch. Jacksonville has to backfill the safety room with a body that wasn't on the 53.
What I won't do is pretend I know Ransaw's job. The report doesn't say whether he was a core special teamer or the last safety on the depth chart, and no snap count has surfaced. If he was running down on coverage units, the replacement cost is real and worth tracking. If he was roster ballast, this is a formality and I'm wasting your time.
So the story isn't Ransaw. It's whatever else Jacksonville did Tuesday and didn't detail. A team shuffling two roster spots in October is either patching a hole or setting up for something bigger, and the reporting so far only gave us half of it.
My verdict: the IR placement is noise. The unlisted moves are the signal. Whoever reports those first will tell you more about the Jaguars' October than this transaction ever could.
